St. Thomas More: A Witness to Conscience, Courage, and Faith

St. Thomas More Feast Day June 22nd

Each year on June 22, the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Thomas More, patron saint of statesmen, politicians, lawyers, judges, and civil servants. More than 490 years after his death, his example continues to inspire those who seek to serve both justice and truth.

As Lord Chancellor of England, St. Thomas More held one of the highest offices in the land. He was respected as a scholar, lawyer, diplomat, and trusted advisor to King Henry VIII. Yet history remembers him not for the power he held, but for the principles he refused to abandon.

When King Henry VIII demanded recognition as the supreme head of the Church in England, More faced a profound crisis of conscience. Rather than compromise his deeply held beliefs, he resigned his position, accepted imprisonment, and ultimately gave his life rather than betray his faith.

In the foreword to The Last Riddle, Cardinal Vincent Nichols reflects on More’s final days in the Tower of London:

“If his body was confined, his spirit was free. He never changed his mind or compromised the truth. The care of his soul and conscience always came first, whatever the consequences.”

These words capture the essence of St. Thomas More’s legacy. Though stripped of his freedom, his office, and eventually his life, he remained steadfast in his commitment to truth and conscience.

Cardinal Nichols goes on to remind us why More remains such a compelling example today:

“Saint Thomas More is a compelling role model not only for all those in positions of authority—it is no accident that Pope Saint John Paul II declared him the patron of politicians—but for anyone facing difficult decisions on matters of conscience. He shows that we can endure great adversity, even death itself, and yet come to fulfillment.”

For members of the legal profession, More’s witness carries particular significance. Lawyers, judges, and public servants are often called to navigate difficult ethical questions and make decisions that require courage, integrity, and fidelity to principle. St. Thomas More reminds us that professional excellence and personal faith need not be separated. His life demonstrates that conscience is not a burden to be avoided but a gift to be protected.

As we honor St. Thomas More on his feast day, may we be inspired by his unwavering commitment to truth, his dedication to justice, and his trust in God’s providence, even in the most challenging circumstances.

“May he pray for us, so that one day we may merrily be together in heaven.”

St. Thomas More, patron saint of statesmen, politicians, lawyers, judges, and civil servants, pray for us.
